Role Full-Stack Java Engineer (consultant)
FHIR-based architecture enabling secure data exchange between open-source healthcare applications — EMR, lab, DICOM radiology and ERP.
Context
Healthcare facilities across Africa and Europe run separate open-source applications — OpenMRS for medical records, OpenELIS for the lab, the Kapsiki platform for everything else. Each system holds one part of the patient journey.
Challenge
Move patient data between systems designed independently, with no shared model, while meeting the security and compliance requirements that apply to health data.
Solution
Designed a FHIR-based interoperability architecture covering EMR, lab and radiology workflows, with REST and SOAP APIs secured by Keycloak. Added a notification system and a legally compliant electronic document-signing feature. Every feature delivered with TDD (JUnit 5, Mockito).
Outcome
A unified suite — EMR, lab information system, DICOM viewer and ERP — deployed for healthcare facilities and SMEs across two continents.
